SHI launches hull for $4-B Cedar LNG's FLNG vessel
Samsung Heavy Industries has launched the hull for the floating LNG (FLNG) unit that will serve the Cedar LNG project in Canada. The 3.3-million-tonnes-per-year vessel, named Megugu, was floated out last week and will now move into the next construction phase, including installation of topside modules and LNG cargo tanks ahead of its planned delivery in the first half of 2028.

The $4 billion Cedar LNG project, located in Kitimat and majority-owned by the Haisla Nation in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corporation, is centered on the $2.2 billion near-shore FLNG facility.
Samsung Heavy said it is the first shipbuilder to have three FLNG units under construction simultaneously at one yard. In addition to Cedar LNG, the company is building Petronas’s ZLNG vessel and Eni’s Coral Norte FLNG for Mozambique. The shipbuilder also recently secured a $2.9 billion contract from Delfin Midstream to build a 4.4-mtpa floating LNG unit for offshore Louisiana, expected to become the world’s largest FLNG facility when delivered in 2030.
