Spain's gas use falls again despite recovery in industrial demand

(Reuters) - Spain's gas demand fell 4% in the first quarter of the year as a drop in use to produce electricity and keep homes warm during a mild winter offset a higher industry requirement, gas grid operator Enagas said on Tuesday.
Gas demand has contracted for the past two years, as the contribution of renewable sources to the country's energy mix increases, reducing the amount of gas burned to produce electricity.
In the first quarter of the year, the amount of gas used to produce electricity was 24% lower than a year earlier.
Mild winter temperatures saw a drop of more than 10% in household gas consumption.
Industrial demand, including from heavy-usage sectors such as refining, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, rose 8.4%.
