Hyundai Heavy Industries gets approval for its LNG containment system
South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has secured a general approval for its independently developed LNG containment system from Lloyd’s Register.
The company noted in its statement that the general approval of the system, named HyMEX, is above the basic approval in principle (AiP) which represents the certification of the basic design of the technology.
Following the award of the general approval, HHI is ready to complete the full-scale demonstration of HiMEX by 2020.
The system features a membrane-type LNG cargo tank technology with a double barrier structure limiting the sloshing effect.
The company has now set its sights on developing vessel fueling and propulsion technology as a step towards the decarbonization of ships, according to a company official.
So far this year, Hyundai Heavy Industries has scored orders for 12 liquefied natural gas carriers as well as 12 orders for vessels using LNG as fuel, the statement reads.
