Nordic Ren-Gas and avanca/Alternoil sign €1-B renewable eMethane offtake agreement
Nordic Ren-Gas, Finland’s leading eMethane developer, and avanca Energy AG, one of Europe’s largest renewable LNG platforms, with its subsidiaries avanca Renewables AG, managing the renewable fuel portfolio, and Alternoil GmbH, Germany’s largest renewable LNG distributor, has announced a milestone long-term offtake agreement for renewable eMethane produced at Ren-Gas’s Tampere facility. The deal — valued at €1 billion over its term — is one of the largest commercial partnerships of its kind in Europe and represents a concrete step in building a fully integrated, cross-border renewable eMethane supply chain.
The agreement combines Ren-Gas’s proven Finnish e-methane production platform with avanca’s/Alternoil’s established renewable LNG distribution network in Europe. Renewable e-methane produced at the Tampere facility will be distributed through existing gas infrastructure directly to heavy-duty truck operators — requiring no modifications to vehicles or fueling stations.
Renewable eMethane is produced by combining renewable hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide. Chemically equivalent to biomethane, it functions as a drop-in fuel for existing gas and LNG infrastructure, making it one of the most immediately and cost-effective deployable decarbonization options available for long-haul freight today.
Ren-Gas’s production model integrates renewable electricity procurement, green hydrogen production, biogenic carbon capture, methanation and district heating — a sector-coupled approach that improves energy efficiency, reduces carbon intensity and lowers production costs. The Tampere facility is part of a fully permitted project portfolio that positions Ren-Gas as one of Europe’s most advanced e-methane developer.
“This agreement is a landmark milestone — both for Ren-Gas and for the European renewable e-methane market. It reflects the quality and competitiveness of our projects, the strength of our Finnish production platform, and the growing commercial appetite for scalable renewable fuel solutions across Europe,” said Saara Kujala, CEO, Nordic Ren-Gas.
Unlimited renewable LNG supply. As one of Europe’s largest renewable LNG platforms, avanca Energy AG operates a fully integrated supply chain through its subsidiaries. Avanca Renewables AG manages the renewable fuel portfolio – sourcing Bio-LNG and e-methane and accompanying upstream production partnerships across Europe, while Alternoil operates Germany’s largest renewable LNG distribution network, comprising 55 fueling stations and over 120 dispensing points, operated 24/7 across the country. Together, avanca Energy AG and its subsidiaries cover the entire value chain from production to the filling station — including logistics, buffer stocks and last-mile distribution across Germany.
The agreement with Ren-Gas secures a long-term, competitive supply of renewable e-methane that – as part of avanca Renewables AG’s portfolio management – can be delivered to heavy-duty transport customers across Europe, and through Alternoil’s existing infrastructure directly to German operators. The partnership enables avanca to further expand its renewable LNG portfolio and offer operators a commercially attractive alternative to fossil fuels at unlimited scale.
“Ren-Gas’s renewable e-methane combines low carbon intensity, technical scalability and genuine commercial competitiveness. This partnership lets us deliver real decarbonization value to LNG-powered operators today, while demonstrating the wider potential of existing gas infrastructure to support Europe’s energy transition in an cost-effective manner,” said Jürgen Muhle, CEO & Chairman of the Board, avanca Energy AG.
Building the European eMethane market. The Ren-Gas–avanca partnership demonstrates that renewable e-methane is moving into large-scale commercial deployment. With a scalable, fully permitted Finnish project portfolio, Ren-Gas is positioned to respond to growing European demand. The deal reinforces Finland’s role as a competitive production hub for renewable eMethane and supports Europe’s broader energy security and decarbonization objectives.
