ABB introduces Unification X to enable seamless control room integration

ABB’s Control Room Solutions (CRS) business in Sweden has unveiled Unification X, a global solution aimed towards optimizing control room operations, by enabling seamless integration across multiple operational systems.

The launch of Unification X aims to address the growing complexity in industrial control rooms, where operators must manage diverse systems efficiently. ABB’s goal is to simplify operations, improve responsiveness and enhance the overall working environment for plant and process operators.

The system is a tailored technical package composed of different products intended to operate effectively together. It features a new design study process that allows for the creation of an ideal control room tailored to an operator's needs in both physical space and digital setup. During a test on a traditional solution versus a Unification X solution, ABB was able to reduce the footprint measurement of one operator configuration by as much as 35%.

Unification X empowers operators with centralized control, flexibility and speed, making control rooms smarter, safer and more efficient. Operators can switch between control setups in an instant, making it ideal for high-pressure environments like emergency response or shift handovers.

The solution is developed for any industry that needs a control room, such as oil and gas, energy, utilities, manufacturing, blue light, infrastructure, and process industries. It is a scalable and secure solution that will support operators and engineers managing complex control environments.

Unification X, which will be available on ABB’s Extended Operator Workplace (EOW) and other CRS products, offers several benefits:

  • Operators gain intuitive control over multiple systems with minimal physical effort.
  • Managers benefit from improved coordination and reduced downtime.
  • IT and cyber security teams value the secure, networked architecture. Built on a dedicated network, the solution ensures top-tier protection against cyber threats without compromising performance.
  • With support for dual workstations and multi-desk setups, Unification X delivers unmatched adaptability for evolving control room needs.

These benefits are achieved by streamlining all systems within the control room and aligning them towards a set number of monitors, keyboards and mice. ABB can also help create a more flexible working environment, by allowing operators to freely swap workstations to better fit certain situations in the control room, such as night-time shifts and abnormal situations.

"Unification X is a leap forward in control room integration. It reflects ABB’s commitment to innovation, operator-centric design, and secure digitalization," said Sebastian Karlsson, General Manager, Control Room Solutions at ABB’s Energy Industries division.
