WGLC 2024 opens with strong call for women’s leadership in energy

The 20th annual Women’s Global Leadership Conference in Energy (WGLC) kicked off with a powerful opening session led by Alexandra “Alie” Pruner, Senior Advisor at Perella Weinberg Partners/TPH&Co.
Pruner’s remarks set an inspiring tone for the two-day event, highlighting not only the remarkable growth of the conference over the past two decades, but also its vital role in fostering a community of women leaders in the energy industry.
Reflecting on the conference’s humble beginnings, Pruner shared the initial skepticism she faced when pitching the idea for a women-focused energy industry gathering. What started with 120 attendees in 2004 has since grown into a global event, reaching thousands of women and breaking attendance records this year.
“This is the highest attendance ever,” Pruner announced to a packed-out conference room at the Marriott Marquis Houston on Nov. 19.
Pruner emphasized the importance of camaraderie and connection, particularly for women navigating senior roles in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
“We need more women at all levels, so please don't quit,” she said.
She celebrated the conference’s ability to spark meaningful networking opportunities, personal growth, and professional collaboration. Many companies now use the event to support affinity groups and mentorship programs, showcasing its transformative impact on the industry.
As she turned to the challenges and opportunities ahead, Pruner called attention to the energy sector’s critical role in addressing the world’s increasing demand for power. She noted that this “next industrial revolution,” driven by advancements such as artificial intelligence, would require innovative solutions and a commitment to sustainability.
“The energy industry needs the best minds to propel us forward,” she said, adding, “Those minds reside in all sorts of bodies and from every corner of the globe. Our collective mission is imperative. We, meaning all of us in the room and the hundreds online, need to deliver on the mission of providing energy to the world's population.”
Pruner closed with a call to action for attendees: to champion one another, drive solutions to global energy challenges, and continue to grow the pipeline of women leaders.
“Game on,” she concluded.
