Borouge to help power Egyptian Decent Life project

Borouge, a leading petrochemical company, has collaborated with the gas distribution company, Egypt Gas, to provide energy and infrastructure solutions to power thousands of households as part of the ‘Hayah Karima’ initiative (meaning Decent Life). The $38.2 B (EGP 600 B) project aims to improve the quality of life and standard of living of over half of Egypt’s population – mainly in the poorest rural communities - under the national Vision 2030. 

The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum is planning to provide natural gas to nearly 1,332 villages under Hayah Karima. Borouge is working closely with Egypt Gas to accelerate the expansion of the local natural gas network. 

For over two decades, Borouge’s gas distribution pipes made from BorSafe ME3441, a medium density polyethylene (MDPE) material, have been delivering energy to Egypt safely and reliably. BorSafe ME3441 MDPE is currently being used in the Hayah Karima project and enables the manufacturing of highly flexible pipes, which are essential in piping systems found in sub-mains and housing connections. Furthermore, Borouge’s energy and infrastructure solutions are ideal for meeting the rapidly growing expansion needs of the Egyptian national gas grid. 

To support the needs of the mega project, Egypt Gas will also be using Borouge’s BorSafe HE3492-LS-H application, which allow it to be extruded with significantly less plate-out, and have good low sag performance. BorSafe HE3492-LS-H PE100RC orange pipe resins are also capable of withstanding higher pressures, high stress situations and higher UV incidence allowing it to be safely stored outdoors for extended periods of time. These properties present an added safety benefit for transport and installation companies and outperforming similar polyethylene grades.

To meet the growing global demand for differentiated polyolefin solutions, Borouge recently announced its fourth world-scale expansion of its Ruwais Complex - Borouge 4. The new facility will have an industry-leading focus on sustainability by leveraging the capabilities of both ADNOC and Borealis. Borouge 4 will utilize Borealis’ proprietary Borstar technology, to produce a product portfolio focused on durable applications for energy, infrastructure, advanced packaging, and agriculture sectors.
