Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago sign joint statement for gas export

Caracas.- Mr. Nicolás Maduro, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and Mr. Keith Rowley, First Minister of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago signed a joint statement for the implementation of Dragon Field Interconnection project, located in the northern shores of Sucre state, with Hibiscus platform, located in the Caribbean nation.

This important project of historic significance to the relations between Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago involves methane gas confirmed sale, taking Mariscal Sucre Project Dragon field as the main supply source.

In this regard, President Maduro explained that “by means of this agreement, we keep on moving in the right direction, towards a comprehensive energy association. 12 years have elapsed, and it is time to see concrete results, in a pacific and cooperative way, translated into concrete wealth, transforming joint gas fields, benefits such as education, health, public services and good living for both nations”.

One of the objectives of this negotiation is the transporting of Venezuelan gas to Hibiscus platform and then to Point Fortin, where this gas would be turned into liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In this sense, the Venezuelan President highlighted the agreement materialization as an example of joint development. “Many countries have declared war among them, seeking to appropriate the wealth shared in their territories; on the contrary, Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago say to the world that we will develop our common wealth in peace, cultivating a good neighborhood relationship, which definitely evolves towards a brotherhood and sisterhood relationship”.

It should be noticed that during last two years, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) and The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC), as well as Shell, have worked around gas interconnection feasibility between both countries, on the basis of the natural gas resources existing in the Venezuelan continental platform.

It will be recalled that on March 15th, 2017 an energy cooperation agreement was signed which covers building, operation and maintenance of a gas pipeline which will extend from Dragón field to Hibiscus field.

Mr. Keith Rowley, Trinidad & Tobago first minister, highlighted the historic significance of this cooperation agreement. “What we have just done is how, through a pen and a paper, we have been able to materialize a business opportunity present every day and now put it into practice to the benefit of both nations. Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago are linked geologically and geographically, and we have historically channeled our energy resources as the engine of our economies; today, upon the will of both governments, we give a new momentum to our cooperation spirit”, assured Mr. Rowley.

From the signature of this agreement, President Maduro gave instructions to Mr. Manuel Quevedo, People’s Minister of Petroleum and president of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), to travel to Trinidad & Tobago in order to make progress towards a comprehensive association on oil and gas at all levels, with the view to boost the whole potential of both nations in energy matters.

The signature of this agreement ratifies the engagement of both nations to continue fostering bilateral energy Integration, based on the principles of reciprocity, solidarity, complementarity and respect for sovereignty, which translates into benefits for the social and economic development of Venezuelan and Trinidad & Tobago peoples and the whole Caribbean region.
