Poland, Slovakia to get EU subsidy for secure gas link
WARSAW (Reuters) -- Poland's and Slovakia's gas pipeline operators have been granted a European Union subsidy of up to 108 million euros ($115 million) to build a gas link between them, Polish state pipeline operator Gaz-System said on Friday.
The link will open the Slovakian market to gas supplies from Poland's liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the coastal city of Swinoujscie launched last year, the head of the Polish operator, Tomasz Stepien, said in a statement.
Poland buys most of the gas it consumes from Russia, but has reduced that in recent years and plans to cut it further.
Gaz-System said the link is part of the North-South corridor project in central-eastern and south-eastern Europe "to increase diversification and security of gas supplies."
The pipeline will be 164 km (100 miles) long, of which 58 km will be in Poland.
