Saipem wins EPCI works contract for TAP gas pipeline in Europe

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project company has awarded a contract to Italy's oil and gas contractor Saipem for engineering, procurement, construction and installation of an offshore pipeline across the Adriatic Sea, connecting Albania and Italy, officials announced on Thursday.

The project scope includes associated civil works at the landfalls in both Albania and Italy, offshore pipeline installation, offshore fiber optic cable supply and installation, as well as pre-commissioning and survey activities, TAP said in a news release.

The 878-kilometer TAP pipeline will transport Azeri gas from the giant Shah Deniz II field through the last leg of the Southern Gas Corridor, connecting with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline at the Turkish-Greek border at Kipoi and then crossing Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in southern Italy.

The TAP offshore pipeline across the Adriatic Sea between Albania and southern Italy will be about 105 kilometers long, down to near 820 meters below sea level at the deepest.

The coated offshore 36-inch line pipes, the anodes and the buckle arrestors will be provided by TAP.

"While offshore construction raises specific challenges, Saipem’s robust technical bid, strong safety track record and experienced team of specialists reassure us that works will be executed to the highest standards and industry best practice," said Ian Bradshaw, managing director at TAP.
