Gulf Energy Information is pleased to announce that the 7th annual Eastern Mediterranean Gas Conference (EMGC) will return to Nicosia, Cyprus, on 11–12 March 2019. EMGC is the only event that is supported by and features representation from the key ministerial offices in the region. The event will be held at The Landmark Nicosia, formerly the Hilton Cyprus.
The conference program is sponsored by Cyprus Hydrocarbons Co. and Hellenic Hydrocarbon Resources Management and hosted by Petroleum Economist. Other sponsors and partners include CYGAS (DEFA), Oceaneering International Inc., and Multimarine Services Ltd. Media partners include Petroleum Economist, Hydrocarbon Processing, Gas Processing & LNG, Pipeline & Gas Journal, World Oil and Pipeline News.
Since its inception in 2013, EMGC has offered attendees unique insight into the region’s energy evolution. The conference provides attendees with the latest information on the Eastern Med’s developing natural gas industry, as well as the ability to gain entry to regional markets and meet potential new business partners (Fig. 1).
Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry for the Republic of Cyprus, Georgios Lakkotrypis, will open the 2020 conference with a keynote address. The remainder of the conference program will focus on regionally and globally relevant topics such as LNG supply and demand, geopolitical challenges, gas export routes, offshore services and investment opportunities. EMGC 2020 will also include expert panel discussions on the roles of Cyprus, Israel and Egypt in Eastern Med development, as well as economics and reducing the carbon footprint of Eastern Med gas.
Recent developments in the Eastern Med. In recent years, major offshore natural gas fields have been discovered in the Eastern Mediterranean, such as Zohr (30 Tft3 of reserves) in Egypt, Leviathan (22 Tft3) and Tamar (11 Tft3) in Israeli waters, Aphrodite (8 Tft3) offshore Cyprus, and Calypso (5 Tft3–8 Tft3) in disputed territory near Cyprus that has been claimed by both Cyprus and Turkey.
Egypt and Israel are both exploring ways to export gas. At present, the Zohr field is producing 2.7 Bft3d of gas, while Israel aims to commence production from Leviathan in early 2020. Israel may send some of its gas to Egypt—which, despite being a large gas producer itself, has high enough demand to absorb imports at its operating regasification facilities. Egypt could also reexport some of the Israeli gas to Europe.
In mid-2019, Egypt, Greece, the Greek Cypriot Administration, Italy, Israel, Jordan and Palestine signed a regional pact, dubbed the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum. The pact is designed to enhance cooperation in energy trade, both within the region and between Eastern Med countries and the rest of the world.
Join us in Cyprus! EMGC is the premier event for those interested in the opportunities the region presents. The conference brings together top executives, government officials and regional experts involved in determining the natural gas policies of the Eastern Med, for an in-depth discussion on the latest developments, challenges and opportunities.
In 2019, nearly half of all EMGC attendees held the job title of Director or higher, including CEO, President, COO, Managing Director, Country Manager, Partner and others. Furthermore, over one-quarter of all attendees in 2019 came from operating companies active in the region. Twenty countries were represented by attendees last year. Delegate registration and additional information can be found online at EMGasConference.com.
