Ukraine increases gas imports, transmission operator says
Ukraine increased gas imports over the weekend and on Monday to around 15.5 MMm3d, up from about 14.5 MMm3d during the previous week, the operator of the state-run gas transmission system said.
Ukraine has been forced to ramp up gas withdrawals from storage and increase imports this winter and spring after Russian missile attacks damaged production facilities in the east of the country.
Data from the operator showed that Ukraine will import 9.7 MMm3 of gas from Hungary and 5.7 MMm3 from Poland on Monday.
The former head of the Ukrainian gas transit operator, Serhiy Makogon, said last month that the country needed to import up to 6.3 Bm3 of gas for the 2025–2026 winter season as reserves have fallen to a record low due to war-related damage to some facilities.
He said Ukraine would need up to $3 B to buy such high volumes of gas.
Ukraine's state oil and gas firm Naftogaz has said it was in talks with the government and international financial institutions to raise €1 B ($1.1 B) to purchase over 2 Bm3 of gas for the 2025–2026 heating season.
Naftogaz has said it also contracted 300 MMm3 of American LNG with deliveries from Poland's Orlen.
Ukrainian energy consultancy ExPro said this month that Naftogaz could import 400 MMm3 of gas in May from Poland and Hungary.
